I've built a simple portal using Microsoft's Digital Dashboard SDK. IMHO, any company who wants an EIP can get one up and running quickly, with little more investment than the hardware, a programmer or two, and someone who understands the business units' needs. Heck, even if you buy an EIP you need those...

I believe that a good, integrated EIP will be a differentiator when companies are evaluating application suites such as those by Oracle, Peoplesoft, etc. "Does it have an EIP?" will be one line on an RFP.

PlumTree in particular looks to be nothing more than an advanced Digital Dashboard implementation, which they then re-sell. From the FAQs on their site:

Q: What is the difference between a Digital Dashboard and a Plumtree Corporate Portal?

A: A Plumtree Corporate Portal is an enterprise-ready Digital Dashboard solution. Microsoft provides a Digital Dashboard Resource Kit for organizations that desire to experiment with the dashboard concept. The resource kit contains the tools, documentation, and sample code required to build a custom, first-generation digital dashboard. Microsoft recommends that organizations that want to deploy their dashboards in a production environment work with a Digital Dashboard partner like Plumtree. Plumtree provides a scalable, out-of-the-box portal application that enables customers to upgrade their digital dashboard to a full-scale portal solution that supports thousands of users.

I would be interested to know from anyone who is familiar with both Digital Dashboard and PlumTree if this is nothing more than marketing collaboration hooie between vendors.
