>> PCS Auction Resumes, Bids Climb To $12 Billion
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Kristy Bassuener
January 4, 2001

The sale of 422 wireless PCS licenses re-started this morning, and bids rose to a net $12 billion after 27 rounds Thursday afternoon.

Verizon-backed Cellco Partnership remains the biggest spender, offering a total of 4.06 billion for 27 licenses. The carrier -- the country's largest with 27.5 million subscribers -- has already nailed at least 10 megahertz of spectrum in 13 of the 15 top markets, and 20 megahertz in coveted New York, Los Angeles and Boston regions.

AT&T-backed Alaska Native Wireless follows Verizon, and bid a total of $2.87 billion.

Cingular Wireless-funded Salmon PCS follows ANW , and bid $2.19 billion by the end of the 27th round.

Big city market bidding has slowed, and analysts at Salomon Smith Barney say they expect the sale to continue through mid-month as companies focus on smaller markets. The firm expects the auction to bring the FCC and the federal government between $15 and $20 billion. <<

Other High Bidders include DCC (Dobson), VoiceStream, et al.

ALLTEL, CFW, Cincinnati Bell and Nextel Have dropped out of bidding.

Auction appears to be winding down quickly. Should be over this month, maybe even mid month.

not925,

<< Where did those worldwide CDMA subscriber count (numbers and graphs) go? >>

Still there (on the Marv new site) <g>

To get there you click on CDMA Technology on left.

Then you click on CDMA Worldwide Database on left.

There we are:

cdg.org

(Good idea to bookmark it)

Now click on the banner for cdmaOne Worldwide Subscriber Growth information through June which maybe we'll update some day.

Now click on the banner AGAIN for cdmaOne Worldwide Subscriber Growth information press release for numbers through 3rd quarter (September).

OR:

Just use the GSM website (bigger budget) for estimated numbers through October (which may be 2 million high):

gsmworld.com

%^&* !@#$ (Pardon my French!) <g>

Maybe we should take up a collection.
