Channelling the H here - he says that War in the Pacific was basically unplayable. He had a copy and sold it too cheap because he didn't realize what it was worth. What he regrets is not buying War in Europe because it was actually playable. It was the biggest game ever made, but actually something people could play. As opposed to War in the Pacific, which was an exercise in hyper-realism and history but not something one could play.

His favorite of the big SPI games is Terrible Swift Sword. The game is large and complex but it "clicks." There were a number of very good games based on the same system but on a much more playable scale.

Of the more recent war games he likes the Markham Quads, which is (are?) a series of games on battles fought circa the Crusades Era to the English Civil War, published by 3W. They are simple enough to be playable in an afternoon but have enough "chrome" to have a great deal of the flavor of the period.

Unfortunately he hasn't found very many people who will play any war game with him. So what he usually plays is abstract European strategy games.

End channelling. We are in Northern Virginia, if you know anyone who likes to play.

Ron,
I have "War in the Pacific" in the cupboard. It is a great game, though all those little hit markers piling up on the ship markers do get unwieldy.

Ron,
Oops, I looked in the cupboard and found "Victory in the Pacific" by Avalon Hill, not "War" which is another thing entirely. Drat. Been too many years since I played which explains my poor memory.
