Apparently most people did not take their gains last winter and sold in panic at lows this fall.

Perhaps many investors "sold in panic at lows this fall", but I can't think of any of the successful investors I follow on SI who did what you describe. It seems to me that a common characteristic of the successful investors on SI is that they don't allow fear to drive them to sell. I'm thinking of the usual "suspects" -- Uncle Frank, Mike Buckley, Voltaire, Ibexx ...
