It wasn't MITI, it was MOF, and there are vast differences between a government being lead actor and private individuals and organizations sending money to their mutual funds. Yes, the one-time gains accounting issues and put selling and option giveaways and all the rest should be more transparent, but the SEC draws a pretty clear line on what's legit and what isn't. Japan doesn't HAVE an SEC. We have to agree to disagree that the two problems have similar causes, even if the outcome is the same (which I don't think is).
