3G will give way to nothing before 4G. Perhaps you are thinking of the 2.5G technology GPRS, which is a bridge between 2G and 3G.

We should have a list of all these technologies, to compare and dissect. I know there is similar discussion on the QCOM and IDCC threads, but it would be nice to have it all laid out here, in terms comprehensible to people like me.
