thanks for the info. My bios is several years old, so I probably can't do it. Will definitely try it on my next machine (ca. 2010).

If these have to be adjusted 20% for your 2-bit overhead, that leaves 34.5 for Maxtor and 49.4 for IBM.

I think IBM gets its advantage from its leadership in GMR heads.
