B: Greek Stocks Close Lower

ATHENS (Jan. 5) XINHUA - Greek equity prices ended sharply lower Friday with
the general index on the Athens Stock Exchange ( ASE) falling 2.86 percent to
3,217.96 points.

The FTSE/ASE 20 index ended 2.75 percent lower at 1,850.53 points while the
FTSE/ASE 40 index closed at 377.35 points, down 2. 11 percent.

Turnover was a low 44.118 billion drachmas (about 124 million U. S. dollars).

Decliners led advancers by 302 to 32 with another 17 issues unchanged.

The insurance and investment sectors led the declining stock market by ending
3.14 percent and 3.11 percent lower respectively.

Wednesday was the first day of trade for Greek equity prices in the new year
following Greece's entry into the euro zone on January 1.

During the first three sessions of the new year, the ASE general index lost 4.90
percent, with the FTSE/ASE 20 index falling 5.15 percent and the FTSE/ASE 40
index easing 4.57 percent.
