The book "Winner Take All" by William Gallacher touches on some similar themes.

There is some interesting information on product hawker Larry Williams. It seems in 87 he turned 10,000 into over a million winning a contest sponsored by a brokerage firm. That same firm then launched a fund with Williams as manager. Unfortunately for investors, it folded soon afterwards, losing more then 50%. WIlliams and the firm both ended up with slap on the wrist fines for the marketing hype. Another fund was launched in Mar 89...which lasted until May 90 when it also folded down over 50%
