Comverse Technology (CMVT-$97 13/16–Cap $16.8-Buy)
Susan Passoni
Comverse Invests in Instant Messaging Co, Odigo
FY00E $1.47, FY01E $1.78

* Yesterday, Comverse announced a strategic investment in Odigo. The investment comes as part of Odigo’s recent $15.4 million private placement. Odigo is a leading provider of instant messaging solutions with over 2 million registered users.

* Comverse plans to leverage its relationship with Odigo to enhance CMVT’s ability to enable a wide range of devices with mobile instant messaging.

* This investment is part of CMVT’s ongoing strategy to invest in smaller startups with technologies that complement CMVT’s core enhanced service offerings. Comverse makes these investments both independently and jointly with the Soros funds through a venture arm ComSor. Previous investments include SignalSoft (SGSF, Buy), a leading provider of location-based platforms and software.

* With over $1.6 billion in cash, we expect to see Comverse continue to make both strategic investments and outright acquisitions to expand its product portfolio.

* Comverse continues to leverage its impressive customer base of over 350 carriers as it offers an ever-expanding portfolio of enhanced service product offerings.

In this very bad market that we've had (tide is turning?), CMVT has simply been stellar. My large cap tech or momo tech stocks have been hammered, while CMVT has held right in there. Great company, great stock.
