Intel Corp. has bought 31 acres in the long-vacant Scripps Ranch Business Park, setting the stage for a corporate campus for the high-tech behemoth's San Diego operations.

News that Intel had completed the $31.3 million acquisition evoked a giddy reaction from local politicians and business leaders.

"It's very significant," said Kevin Carroll, executive director of the local chapter of the AeA, formerly known as the American Electronics Association.

"It's another example of a corporate campus coming to San Diego. The clustering effect around corporate campuses is demonstrated. It happened in Silicon Valley. It's going to happen here."

An Intel spokesman was quick to say that the world's largest computer-chip maker has no immediate plans for the site, which it acquired last week.
