James, you know what I think is happening is an education of the American middle of the road. For eight years good people who could not stumach the scum of a guy who was popular were written off as maybe extreme by the middle because of the bias of the press and slick tongued spinners. Now we have a decent guy running things and he is picking good decent people and the same left wing scum is trying to invent bad out of absurdity. The folks in the middle are not dumb and the liberals will lose credability by their silence and a rethinking of the original real flaws of Clinton Gore and his eight years will come more to be understood and scorned by more in the middle. This the liverals are clueless about and I seem many of them running pell mell into traffic without looking. Thwock Thwock it's sad, very sad but I find myself falling off my chair laughing. I guess I not as pure as I should be as I should not have a knowing smile over the misfortune of mindless liberal minions.

JM, I don't think the issue with Ashcroft is racism. I think its a question of ethics. He blocked White's nomination claiming he was "pro-criminal" and "anti-death penalty". Reality was that White was very mainstream on the Mo. Supreme Court having voted more than 70% of the time AGAINST death penalty appeals(versus aboutg 60% for the rest of the court).

What really transpired here was that White had joined an opinion to throw out a conviction of a deranged man who killed several law enforcement folks. White made very clear that he was concerned that the defendant may not have been competent to stand trial, may have had severe mental illness that rendered him incapable of assisting his defense and that his counsel had not given him a competent defense because of this.

The law enforcement agencies in Mo. wanted this guy toasted because he killed some cops and White's nomination was supported by Gov. Carnahan(who had appointed him). Ashcroft very cynically decided that he could use this one case and the emotional outrage of the law enforcement community to get at Carnahan by branding "his guy" as a "pro-criminal" judge.

It was all election BS that Ashcroft tried to use to keep from losing his seat to Carnahan. That's your man of integrity and principle.

There is a lot more stuff about Ashcroft that really renders him unfit for AG, but, I doubt folks on this board would be interested in hearing it...
