Approximately 300 of Recognition Systems' patented biometric hand readers now comprise a critical element in the airport's overall security system. "There are few public facilities that require as much attention to security issues as a major international airport," said Jim Scott, president of IR Security & Safety Solutions. "IR's ability to meet the stringent security requirements of San Francisco Airport's new international terminal demonstrates the company's technological and market leadership within the security and safety industry." The Recognition Systems hand readers, which turn the hand itself into an identification card, are now in use at more than a dozen major U.S. airports, including New York's Kennedy International, as well as the principal airports serving Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and Newark, New Jersey. Recognition Systems hand readers also are a key component of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service's INSPASS program. Frequent international travelers, enrolled in the program, use a self-service kiosk which includes a hand reader, and thus avoid having to stand in line, waiting to pass through Immigration. The growing use of Recognition Systems' hand readers is indicative of the overall market for biometric access control technologies. Of note, the International Biometric Industry Association estimates that sales of biometric hardware will increase from $100 million in 2000 to $300 million in 2003. At the new San Francisco Airport international terminal, many of the Recognition Systems hand readers are hard-wired to a Locknetics electromagnetic door lock, another product from IR Safety & Security Solutions. When used in tandem, the two devices begin operating when a person slides a magnetic stripe card, containing his or her identification number, through a card reader. The person then places his or her hand in the hand reader, which analyzes some 90 separate measurements of the hand's length, width, thickness and surface area. The hand reader then quickly compares this data with the hand "template" previously stored in the reader's memory. If the hand matches, entry to the restricted area is granted automatically. If no match is determined, the door remains locked. The entire process takes less than a second. "ID cards can be lost or stolen, or given to family or friends. Our hand readers have proven utterly reliable," said Scott. "As proof, airports all over the world are using them to secure their most sensitive areas, including tarmacs and baggage handling facilities. "In addition to ensuring secure access to property and preventing unwanted or unlawful entry to restricted areas, our products have applications in tracking time and attendance of workers. As a result, we offer a comprehensive system to manage a facility's security as well as to enhance an enterprise's efficiency and productivity."
