Swedish mobile communications vendor Ericsson has signed an agreement with a leading mobile operator in Sri Lanka to research how to encourage consumers in this developing country to switch to third-generation mobile services.

Along with Mobiltel - a joint venture between Sri Lanka Telecom and Telstra, of Australia - Ericsson will conduct early studies of end-user behavior and usage, potential business strategies and technical requirements.

The idea is to explore local consumer needs and how to customize technology, so that it is readily accessible and easy to use in this south Asian island.

Johan Adler, managing director of Ericsson Sri Lanka, said: "As the world leader in provision of wireless infrastructure and development of technologies for the next generation of mobile telephony, Ericsson is well positioned to work with Mobitel in choosing the best migration evolution path to 3G."

Mobiltel recently upgraded its network to TDMA digital technology, enabling superior call clarity, echo-free calling, confidentiality and access to enhanced messaging and information services. It also offers a migration to next-generation technologies such as EDGE, seen by many as a good technology to bridge the gap between 2G and 3G mobile, and W-CDMA, the 3G standard set to be widely deployed in Europe.

Mobitel's chief executive, Cathy Aston, said: "Our joint development of technology and marketing solutions will give us a deeper understanding of the practical 3G market challengers as they apply to Sri Lanka and the ability to customize our services to meet local consumer needs." <<

Has Ericsson released a CDMA handset in the Americas yet?

Eric, master of the rhetorical question.

Ummm, nope (unless you count G* bricks in sat mode <g> ).

ERICY doesn't even show CDMA as a supported network on its consumer device web page.
