WALLDORF, Germany--SAP, the giant business-management software maker, said fourth-quarter operating profit and sales rose more than it expected.

Profit before interest, taxes and stock-option costs rose more than 40 percent to about $570 million. Revenue rose about 27 percent.

SAP shares rose as much as 16 percent, recouping losses last week that stemmed from concerns about a slowing U.S. software market. Chief executive Hasso Plattner is under pressure to boost sales in the United States, SAP's largest market, where the German company faces increased competition from Oracle and smaller Internet business software makers such as Siebel Systems.

"They are good numbers, but I would like to see (a geographic breakdown) before I draw any conclusions about improvement in their U.S. business," said Michael Trauth, a fund manager at the Baden Wuerttembergische Kapitalanlagegesellschaft, which includes SAP shares among its $6.33 billion (13 billion marks) in holdings.

Software sales rose about 25 percent to in the fourth quarter, SAP said. SAP plans to release more earnings details on Jan. 23.
