Do you suppose there's a possibility the barriers to entry that KK used to get moist over really aren't as high as he thought?

It depends on which part of the industry you mean. Active components are more difficult to develop than passives. High end --- high power, high channel-count --- are more difficult to test and qualify than low-end. Remember, it's not just having the best technology, but being first and being designed in that makes you number one. The vendors you alluded to are developing their own components but they also have long-term contracts with both SDLI and JDSU. As for SDLI, we don't know who "other party number one" was, but some think Lucent. We know "other party number two" was Corning and we also know how high they bid before they were forced to drop out. This has to tell you something about their expertise. Anyone who doesn't understand, doesn't know what's at stake.

Of course there will be competition, but JDSU/SDLI is unlikely to give up their position any time soon. Having said that, keep in mind the merger opens a door for second sources. Lots of opportunities there. :)
