Here's an article/press release from that site on optical service provisioning:

Optical Technology Streamlines Network

-----------------------------------------------------------

SUNNYVALE, Calif., December 18, 2000 – Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:RBAK), a leading provider of advanced networking solutions, announced that the cable group of Hargray Communications is using the Redback® SmartEdge™ multi-service optical platform. The rollout, currently underway, covers current Hargray service areas in South Carolina with plans to expand into new areas. With the SmartEdge deployed throughout its network, Hargray will decrease cost and complexity by carrying many services on one platform. The deployment is being executed by ADC Communications, Redback’s partner in the cable industry, who labels the SmartEdge 800 as the UniWorx platform.

"Our customers want to experience services, not the delivery of them. With Redback's SmartEdge technology, we can carry video, data and voice on a single multi-service platform, allowing us to deliver different services to our customers from a single source said, Ed Heuck, operations manager / CLEC of Hargray Communications. "This improves the user experience dramatically by reducing the effort required to access services and increasing the time available to experience them."

The SmartEdge platform was built specifically to accommodate multiple traffic types on a single platform. This means Hargray can consolidate previously disparate networks, such as video and data, onto a single network. Additionally, the SmartEdge requires only about one-sixth the rack space needed by existing technology, and can handle many high bandwidth circuits, up to OC 48 or 2.488 Gigabits per second. The resulting benefit is more shelf space and decreased cost and complexity for cable operators, carriers and service providers.

"Hargray Communications has a 53 year legacy of investing in the latest technology," said Larry Blair, vice president of marketing at Redback Networks. "This is why Hargray has successfully grown their business from basic phone service to advanced Internet, video and billing services. The company's adoption of the SmartEdge technology is the latest example of its ability to stay competitive in the service provider market.”
