Re: Finally a US 3G Spectrum "Preliminary" Decision

>> FCC Names Bands For 3G Wireless

By Kristy Bassuener
January 5, 2001

The Federal Communications Commission has approved a notice of proposed rulemaking, designating possible frequencies for third-generation wireless use. The commission completed the notice before President Clinton’s deadline on Dec. 29. The commission released the news late yesterday.

The proposal offers to look at frequencies currently used for cellular, PCS, broadband wireless and specialized mobile radio services, as well as the 2500-2690 MHz, 1710-1755 MHz, 1755-1850 MHz, 2110-2150 MHz and 2160-2165 MHz bands. Several incumbents have implored the government not to relocate them, and others - including the U.S. Department of Defense - which says that turning over sections of spectrum currently allocated to government could be a potential threat to national security.

Wireless companies and the public may comment on the proposed rulemaking for 30 days following the document’s publication in the Federal Register. Replies to those comments will be accepted for an additional 15 days.

Wireless companies believe that consumers will take to mobile Internet services once they can offer high-speed connections and feature-rich content, similar to a wired Internet experience. The tight deadlines reflect a fast-forward approach outlined by President Clinton in an October executive order. Clinton requested government agencies to identify and clear spectrum for the 3G services for a late summer auction so licenses may be issued by Sept. 2002. <<

Ibexx -

Thanks for the nice chart, but the numbers in the second column (POPs) don't add up, and therefore the total in the third column ($/pop) make no sense - the average is higher than the highest number there. Is this Prudential's mistake or is something else wrong?
