Hi Blake. You're hot this morning.
There are basically two kinds of power in organizations.
Position Power and Knowledge Power.
Position Power is typically gained through superb application of Knowledge Power.
(For example, Barrett and Dell).
To retain Position Power you need people in Knowledge Power positions that are capable of making and defending good decisions. (It's not too long after achieving position power that an individuals knowledge becomes obsolete, especially in the fast moving tech sectors).
I believe in the case of Intel the corporate culture teaches and fosters "Constructive Confrontation". Those that function well in that environment, (which can be intense), are sought after.
It's not perfect. Decisions made on current knowledge can prove wrong over time. On the other hand, what appears to some as bad decisions can prove right over time. And good organizations are adept at course corrections as new knowledge is acquired.
And it doesn't hurt to be paranoid.
Paranoia and confrontation are two of Andy Groves many contributions to the culture.
