To: Skeeter Bug who wrote (14568 ) 1/6/2001 3:06:32 PM From: PMS Witch Respond to of 110652 To the best of my knowledge, DEFRAG is not a DOS command and must run under Windows. ScanDisk is one of the funny ones. C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SCANDISK.EXE is a DOS program. C:\WINDOWS\SCANDSKW.EXE is a Windows program. Many systems create a shortcut to the Windows ScanDisk and call it ScanDisk, adding to the confusion. DOS stuff ... We have more than one flavour of DOS: DOW Window, DOS Mode, and a plain non-enhanced DOS that doesn't recognize long file names ... And SafeMode DOS simply skips processing CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. DOS Window: Click on Explorer, locate and right click C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM and select Create Shortcut. You'll get a shortcut for opening a DOS window. Right-click, choose properties, and work through the options to customize. DOS Mode: If you want DOS mode instead of DOS window, create another shortcut. You'll want to rename it so it won't be confused with your DOS window shortcut. Then right click this shortcut and select properties, program tab, and Advanced button. Put a check in the box MS-DOS Mode. This mode has few options. This is also reachable from Start/Shutdown. Plain DOS: If you want to boot to DOS, and skip loading windows altogether, hold down the F6 key while booting. This will display a menu with a half-dozen booting options. Just pick the number for the one you want. If you find yourself constantly wanting this menu, or like me, forgetting which key to use or when to press it, you can force it to appear at every boot by adding these lines to C:\MSDOS.SYS under the [Options] header. (You'll already have other stuff there, just add these lines. [Options] BootMenu=1 BootMenuDelay=2 This will display the menu for 2 seconds before booting normally. If you're quick, choose 1, more if slow. Zero will disable the menu. Cheers, PW. P.S. To defrag, close all running programs except Explorer an Systray. Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to start the Close Program process. You may have some non-closable programs running that are necessary and peculiar to your system that won't close -- let them remain.
