jlallen,

Of course I am not happy about it. I wonder if Lott had W's support on this?

This pretty much sums it up. ``It is difficult for me to see how two people can drive the car at the same time,'' said Lott's top lieutenant, Sen. Don Nickles, R-Okla.

W's ability to foster bi-partsian support will be put to the test soon.

And how much choice did Lott have?

``It was an unusual election year,'' said the Senate's top Republican, Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi, adding, ``Are we going to make this republic work, produce for the people, or argue over part B of rule 12 of the Senate.''

I agree it is discouraging, but the Democrats have enough votes to produce gridlock either way. Helping them on the committee phase does not make a lot of sense unless Lott traded some horses. I hope he did.

HAGO

<<What do you all think of Lott's capitulation to Daschle? Looks like the Dems will get equal membership, funding and co-chairman status on all senate committees? Seems to me this dooms Bush's agenda from the get go. Very discouraging. Any thoughts? How do we get these guys to act like winners??>>

At least we still have a stronghold on the lower house where there are real firebrands!
