I do not think it likely that the two cultures are related.

The first of the large pyramids, the Step Pyramid of King Djoser (III Dynasty) at Sakkara, was designed by Imhotep, who later achieved god-like status. It was based on the mastaba, a low rectangular tomb. Later pyramids were finished with a polished stone facing. Since Ra (sun god) was so important to the Egyptians, one has only to look at rays of the sun to see from whence the idea came.
