Maurice: I was "astonished" by the technology these "Baha Bug" guys use.. And the love to show it off!! Last spring the Misses and I were on our way to the God forsaken Yuma, AZ (actually it is quite nice in the Winter) to visit some old friends.. We took a side trip through Borrego Springs to see the Desert Flowers in bloom.. While finding our way back to I-8.. We pulled into an enclave of Baha "Desert Rats".. I did so because I wanted to get an idea on how this group could use a Satellite Phone.. I asked them if they used CB Radios in case of an "emergency".. They started laughing.. and said.. Yeah!! We have "those" as a backup.. One of the "Desert Rats" said.. "Follow Me"!.. He proceeded into a Rec. Vehicle.. Inside I was amazed. This guy had a Laptop computer that was displaying "In Real Time".. A map of the desert around them, and 4 Vehicles out "On the Desert" whose exact positions were being updated on the screen.. They were using Amateur Radio Packet Radio... (BTW.. Us Amateur Radio Buffs have been using Packet Radio for well over a decade now!"

When we returned outside.. Another "Desert Rat" demonstrated how the system was wired in his "buggy".. and in addition the emergency "roll over" system.. He had a GPS receiver cabled to a "black box of some type" and the output of the "Black Box" was connected to a 144-146 Mhz 2 Meter Amateur Radio. When he tripped the "roll over" sensor.. The 2 meter radio started transmitting the exact coordinates of the buggy via synthesized Voice.. I asked him if he had a "FCC license" to use the 2 Meter Band.. He pulled out his license, He said some people have them, some don't.. But, he said.. "Hey!! It's the middle of the desert.. " I just thought it was kinda' interesting..
