I didn't grow up in Charlottesville, VA. but in Bloomington, Illinois. The thought of a resturant turning down business was foreign to me. I went to school with (in those days, colored) kids. Walter Gaines started a cleaning business and my dad was his first customer. His family loved rabbit on the table as I did. We took Walter hunting and he enjoyed it but he was a damn poor shot. I remember him cutting off the left hind leg of a rabbit and giving it to me for luck.

After Walter died we took rabbits to the family for years. I remember getting calls from his widow asking when I'd bring her rabbits and telling her to wait for snow, the theory being that tularamia was killed by the first snow.

Her son called one year and claimed I'd given them cats and black power would ... The end of the rabbit give away.
