CSCO didn't create anything substantial in the optical space.

I don't think I used the word "create". I stated that CSCO has been investing heavily - R&D, and supporting organizations, as they establish themselves in the optical and carrier markets. I think it matters little how they executed. What is important, and what many that don't understand this industry fail to realize, is that when a market moves you have to get in early or you will fail to penetrate. In CSCO's case they are able to react to changes in the market by acquiring the neccessary resources to gain significant market share quickly. To date they are showing success in optics and in penetration to carriers - this given all the data I've seen. Do you have data that suggests otherwise?

They buy all their R&D in terms of startups and public companies...

I agree which is why these costs of doing business will grow more slowly allowing more and more earnings to flow to the bottom line.... stock options or not.
