Bland is not especially interested in finding better and more accurate ways to pigeonhole anyone, so your links are unnecessary.

From what bland has previously seen of Matthews (and bland must certainly plead to being out-of-touch with media personalities these days, for he owns no television set) he wouldn't have been surprised at all to hear Matthews labeled a conservative. So what he observed on the night of Gore's concession (a rare occasion where he felt what was happening was important enough to watch) came as a bit of a surprise to him. Matthews was clearly not a happy man, and he was quite effusive in his praise of Gore's speech.

Somewhat later that evening, bland also remembers hearing that Matthews was once a speech writer for Jimmy Carter. Perhaps he heard incorrectly, but he also remembers feeling surprised by that bit of information as well. He would be interested in knowing if anyone can confirm it or not.
