I was lying in bed last night thinking that maybe much of this love of guns is sexual. Guns represent masculinity in our culture- John Wayne, James Bond. They are phallic looking, they go off, and explode. I am sure there must be much written on this. I plan to read up on it. You're quite right about the phallic nature of guns. There's plenty of writing on the topic in psychoanalytic journals. I always chuckle when I hear a group of men talking so fondly and in such great detail about their guns, like thirteen year old boys at a sleepover.
