I'm not sure where it was so I will post to you here. I've been thinking about it a bit, and just wanted to test my ideas with you. How do we define Art? We know that some of the greatest artists who ever lived remained unacknowledged in their own lifetimes. This fact looms too large to be ignored . Obviously, then--the impact or meaning that identifies art is a subjective and variable experience. The fact that one or many do not perceive a particular event as art, does not negate the interpretation of an other. Anything that purports to be art, IS art--at least to somebody; And anything that IS purported to be art, IS art--at least to somebody. This fact also looms too large to be ignored. What experiences inform our particular degree of openness to the meaning of art? How attuned are we to the medium? How sympathetic are we to the artist? How do our senses, our experiences, our minds, our yearnings--how do these inform the gestalt of our experience of artistic merit? How moving is the invitation to transform the self? It is all subjective. It depends on the experiences, the senses, the intelligence, the sensibility, the cultivated faculties of the individual. Art is the communication of meaning. Simplistic meaning for me might be profound for another. Does it caress me with a dangerous and loving breeze, while I walk a tightrope stretched taut between two moons? Does it batter down the barricades; Does it allow the Revolution to pass into the coiffed courtyard of my complacency? (Am I having fun, or what?!) I have not knowingly listened to Eminem. Reading your posted lyrics was sufficient for me to form an opinion. I find nothing shocking or meaningful or unique in his ability to string vulgarities and crap together. I am always suspicious of so called art that can be duplicated by any moron--especially when I (a non artist, par excellence)--am the first clown through the door to do the trick. Obviously, some find meaning in his work, and some find impact. To some he is probably a good artist. To me he is a trashy artist acting out the oldest scenes in the world: Defiance and rebellion . It doesn't move me in any way. In would rather lick my girl friend's throat. Now that is art!
