for Andy short: Alcatel CEO sees strong results for FY 2000

quote.bloomberg.com.

Alcatel Chairman Tchuruk Says 2000 Sales Rose More Than
35%
By Steve Rhinds

Paris, Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Alcatel SA, Europe's second- biggest phone equipment maker,
saw sales rise more than 35 percent in 2000, Chairman and Chief Executive Serge Tchuruk
said in an interview broadcast on Radio Classique.

``We haven't yet come up with final figures, but we're well over 35 percent for the year,''
Tchuruk said. The pace of growth in operating income was almost twice as fast as sales, he
added.

Alcatel reported net sales of 23 billion euros ($22 billion) in 1999, up 8 percent from the prior
year, and operating income was 804 million euros, up 40 percent.

The company is less profitable than rivals such as Sweden's Ericsson AB, ``but we're starting
to make up the lost ground,'' Tchuruk said. ``We're aiming for double-digit margins and we're not
far off that now,'' he added.

In the U.S., where the company is the fourth-biggest telecommunications equipment supplier,
Alcatel should ``fairly quickly'' achieve sales of about $10 billion, Tchuruk said.
Last year, Alcatel bought U.S.-based Newbridge Networks Corp. for $7.1 billion to keep pace
with rivals such as Lucent Technologies Inc. and Nortel Networks Corp.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During Q3 CC ALA has increased forecast for FY2000 revenue growth from mid-30’s to upper 30's %. CEO said they
did WELL ABOVE 35%.
In Q3 ALA were forecasting at least 35% growth(CEO was also speaking for press few weeks before results were
published at the end of October). At that time ALA exceed numbers by huge margins. Historically when Serge Tchuruk
makes bold statement
about numbers before official results are published( January 31-st) he keeps big guns in his hand.

So What!?! Many companies have forced plant shutdowns between xmas and New Year's. Do you need to have someone explain why? Geez! You are foolish if you believe there is a lot of downside risk at this point....

1. Fed has just begun to cut rates (don't fight the Fed)
2. JDSU short interest Dec 15th was 4th largest on NASDAQ
(look a little overdone? - just wait until the big boys
go to cover and do a lot better job that the little
shorts!)
3. MSDW Presentation on Tuesday with top JDSU execs present
(Hmmmmm, I wonder why the top execs will be present??? ;)
4. Earnings coming out on Jan 25th
(no advanced warning from company)
5. GLW Chief Exec announced best year ever
(GLW is one of the other Major players in this space -
ya think they are the only one's doing well?)
6. JDSU / SDLI merger will most likely be approved by the
Government before the end of Jan shareholder meeting.

I would say we have built a nice base and will move up from
here. Downside risk looks minimal to me compared to the upside potential. I'm long JDSU (for the long term)

All my opinion, of course!

Andy, I am in a rush, so yours is the first and last post I can
read now since my last post.
Thank you for the chinese reference.
Here's what I'll do.
I cannot of course disregard this important piece
of evidence from across the oceans ( I always ) think " global ").

I need to decide immediately if I should
dump all my JDSU or not
tomorrow AM at the open based on this
single, non-corroborated,unconfirmed
link in chinese.

So here' what I decided to do:

I will take a crash course in Chinese right now
and decipher the link.

Meanwhile, in case above plan( Plan A ) fails,
could we have Plan B in place?

Could you please post a link in English?

thanks

I got some help in reading the website you provided. It appears to be a message posted in one of those gossip daytraders forum. If you want to use it as a primary guiding tool for investment, be my guest.

So you are 100$ in cash, we are told. You may still be in the same amount of cash when GLW doubles in a year. But I fully understand your intention of talking down the stock in order to get the shares on the cheap.

Good luck to you,
Ibexx

Halloo Andy, I just got a call from China. This website here

toplifetoday.com

Caller is trying to get hold of you.
Says he shorted JDSU on your advice and now stock is moving in opposite direction.
He wants you to re-post the Chinese link and spice it up a little
better.
He says to add that his sister who works at JDSU just called and
said that they are laying her off because fiberoptics business is tanking,
