"According to RealNetworks figures, there are approximately 170 million users of RealPlayer, making it the No. 4 software application in the United States."

Now that's amazing. Any idea what the rest of the top 10 are?

Mary, two important points about that TI/RealNetworks press release:

1. They do issue press releases when they incorporate features from partners into a DSP. In advance, in fact.

I think this significantly reduces the possibility that EDIG is in any TI DSP. They probably would have issued a press release a long time ago.

2. "This is a significant step for Real in its battle for the streaming video viewers with Microsoft because TI doesn't support Windows Media Player," said Gartner analyst P.J. McNealy. "But Real may have only won a battle and not the war.""

Wait a minute. If TI had EDIG inside, wouldn't they support the Windows Media Player?

Mary, I am unable to find any reference to any part on the TI TMS320C54X family that comes with pre-programmed ROM.

There are various parts in that serious with varying amounts of masked ROM, varying from 4K to 48K. All must be programmed to a customer mask.

I am not saying that such a part does not exist: only that none of the versions of the chip which have data sheets available on their web site comes pre-programmed. One one presume, then, that, even if such a part exists, it would represent only a small fraction of units shipped. Maybe somewhere in some dark back hallway at TI, somebody knows about such a chip. :)

They do note that they have a software library with user's can draw from for incorporation into their own software. Maybe EDIG had something to do with the development of this library, or maybe not. I have no opinion on that, as there is no way to tell. (But note the absence of Windows Media, which would suggest "no".) This is software that I presume is provided on disk, CD, or downloaded, and then incorporated into the customer's software before providing TI with ROM contents:

"Software

TI provides complete SDMI compliant solutions in the Internet Audio market space. Not only do we have the best DSPs and analog components for this market, but also a complete suite of audio software. The following is the list of the publicly announced software libraries we have for our TMS320C5000 family of DSPs. Our strategy is to support essentially all Internet Audio software in the market. We'll be announcing our support for more software that run on TI TMS320C5000 family of DSPs.

1.AC-3
2.MPEG MP3
3.MPEG AAC
4.Sony ATRAC 1
5.Sony ATRAC 2
6.TwinVQ
7.AC-3 5.1 ch Decoder Class - A
8.Virtual Dolby Digital
9.MPEG-1 Layer I Encoder
10.MPEG-1 Layer I Decoder
11.MPEG-1 Layer II Encoder
12.MPEG-1 Layer II Decoder
13.AC-3 2 ch Encoder (DDCE) Class A
14.Liquid Audio SP3
15.Lucent ePAC
16.Qdesign QDMC
17.System (Play, Stop, FF, Rew, Repeat)
18.EQ (5-band) /Volume Control (Stereo)
19.Sample Rate Converter (Stereo) "

This list also makes we wonder... how much of EDIG's technology is EDIG's, and how much of EDIG's technology is really TIs?

That is, we know that EDIG has touted a 5-band equalizer as a product feature. Isn't it possible that EDIG simply dropped-in the 5-band equalizer from TI's library?
