Prophet,

SDMC licensing and royalties

I think the agreement is OK from a shareholder perspective.

We need Toshiba's technology to increase storage capacity.
SanDisk has had problems with chip stacking in MMC.

We need Panasonic's clout to promote the standard. Their
presence in the SDA has undoubtedly attracted other consumer
electronics people who hope to eliminate any chance of Sony's
domination. (Having said that, I think Memory Stick is simply
too big for some of the target applications, not the least of
which is cellphones.)

Finally, if SDMC takes off it will be a big boon for MMC indirectly.
SanDisk should benefit directly from this. I don't believe
that Toshiba or Matsushita have any claims to MMC and the backward
compliance of the SDMC slot was a big win for SNDK. Perhaps
they (SNDK) made some concessions because of this consideration.

All IMHO.
