fyo,

Right now, they seem to gain quite significantly from their hardware prefetching. Wouldn't a larger cache help the prefetching (today)? Or is it latency / bandwidth limited?

It is compiler and cache size limited. They have mastered prefetching for SPEC and a few special purpose apps, but it will probably be a good 5 years before the technology is mature, software developers are using it, and the executables are propagated into the hands of end users.

The L2 cache on P4 isn't big enough to randomly preload data, without causing other detrimental effects. Until they get a larger cache, the compiler technology will not be developed.
