Actually I was relieved that she didn't want me to drive her somewhere. I felt guilty about just giving her money because that seemed so inadequate compared to what she would have really needed if the story were true. She said she was scared, and she sounded scared. Being all alone on Capitol Hill after dark on a Sunday would make me scared - most of the businesses are locked and shuttered and there's nobody out there anymore but night prowlers - except on the Capitol grounds, there are cops on the grounds. If it was a scam, it wasn't a safe one, walking around in the dark alone asking strangers for money.

Well, that's not entirely true. It's starting to come back to me. There are a couple of restaurant/bars between where she was and the metro station, and the people who go there are well-heeled. I've been hustled on the sidewalk next to those places several times - I think they've even used the old "I need money for a metro ticket" routine. I mean, how can you turn someone down for a couple of bucks?
