I think it's still rather confusing, this whole "coming of age" thing with women. I know the hurdles we dealt with seem arcane to my teenaged daughters now. I remember my mother telling me that if I wanted to go to medical school (a dream I'm now grateful not to have pursued) I'd have to finance it myself, as my parents had only enough funds to pay for my brother's graduate education. I also remember being forced to take a typing course in high school because, in my parents' words, I could always have secretarial work to fall back on....
