Amy, <Why didn't Intel buy ServerWorks?>

Good question, one that was posed by one of my coworkers over a year ago (back when ServerWorks was called RCC). One of the reasons was anti-trust concerns. Another reason was that our relationship with ServerWorks is that of a successful "coop-tition," in that they are both competitors and cooperators. They were able to cover holes in our server chipset roadmap for the past few years, and they will continue to cover holes for the next several years.

I forgot the other reasons.

<This does not sound good.

Why didn't Intel buy ServerWorks>

It just shows how incompetent Intel's management is. VIA has been eating Intel's lunch in desktop chipsets. Now BRCM will do the same in servers. Also, I am looking forward to BRCM supporting Athlon server platforms.

So I guess, I disagree with you. Sounds good no matter how you look at it :)

Amy,

On the surface, it doesn't sound good to me either.

I don't know that much about ServerWorks, I wonder if Intel needs ServerWorks more than ServerWorks needs Intel? It's an awkward situation at best.

I would like to hear from other who are more knowledgeable about the relationship.

John

Amy,<<<Why didn't Intel buy ServerWorks? >>>

I could understand it if Intel's policy was to grow only through organic means. But, that is not the case. They do make acquisitions. The acquisitions they do make are however always on the timid side. They are never home runs and they are rarely debacles (that we know of).

Intel management is basically from engineering and they lean heavily to the bean counters for business acumen. I wish they had some business minded resources (with some creativity and guts) to draw on - like John Chambers or Scot McNealy.

Currently, Intel is situated at the center of the technology world, but if they continue to rely on bean counters to do anything other than counting beans, Intel's future is not good.
