pcstel,

When I said that the firecrew were well equipped for first aid I meant it. I didn't expect to have to give all the gory details...

They cleaned the worst of the gravel from the injuries, bandaged the leg, immobilised it with splints, moved him onto a stretcher (which they left on the ground) placed ice-packs (clever chemical mixture which gets cold when two components are mixed together) around the leg, gave him pain killers and a little to drink. I expect there was even a blanket and pillow, but I can't remember.

They checked his pulse and I think also his blood pressure regularly. They left flares in the road to alert oncoming traffic, as this happened on a sharp bend in the evening (I had arrived at the observatory after closing time, so I never got to see it).

When a truck driver turned up and offered to get the bike to somewhere safe the firecrew also helped load the bike onto the truck.

Sorry if my lack of detail implied a lack of care by the firecrew. It just didn't seem relevant when I posted.

John
