Two comments:

1. We have had years and years of anecdotes like the one about the disabled Norwegian bikini-clad diver who fell down a fjord when she.....and busted her....and was a-hangin' from the only dead tree limb....and the trekker who woulda, coulda, shoulda had a G* phone saved... This is all nice and maybe the G* phone will save a few lives and be a standard part of any emergency services unit, but: this will certainly generate more neat testimonials than MOU's.

2. <<In the case of a broken leg, time is not critical (apart from the pain and worry)>>
Sorry, John, not correct. Many accident victims have died because of leg fractures and resultant fat embolism. Stick to ears and I'll take care of the Emergency Department.

Best of luck (we need it),
--Steve

John: It was your example.. Most of my posts have not been to disprove your point about the poor communications availability.. But, at the shock at what appeared to be the "lack luster" responsiveness
of the Palomar EMT's...

In times of Emergencies, things get done..The two roads up Palomar Mountain are 'very heavily traveled" . The south road more than the east road.. These are not some "podunk country roads".. They are also quite dangerous!! If you don't "pay attention".. It only takes 15/20 minutes to get up/down Palomar Mountain.. These accidents occur frequently, and the Emergency Services in that area are quite accustomed to "varied forms" of emergencies. Maybe you could have driven to a local telephone to make a call? After all, it was only a broken leg!! I am sure "several cars" had to pass by in that first hour until the "Emergency Medical Team" got off work and happened to "chance by".. There are not alot of paved roads on "Palomar Mountain" where people would not "know where they are!! There is the main road from the "Restaurant / Grocery Store" that ends at the Observatory, or the two roads off the Mountain (that's all that I am aware of.. Or in the State Park.. If your anywhere else... Your probably a local... IMO.. Yes, Emergency Communications are important.. That's why I keep an un-activated AMPS phone in my trunk.. It cost me nothing on monthly basis.. since it is un-activated.. Yet, will work anywhere there is AMPS coverage with a simple 911 and hit the "Send" button... Don't be surprised if someday GMPCS services will also have to conform to the FCC Wireless 911 mandate.. And that means.. You will be able to buy a phone, stick it in your car.. Never pay a monthly fee, and never pay for airtime for "Emergency Calls to 911"..
