Thanks Mark.

"i did, however, purchase a simple RJ45 category 5 crossover cable that i was planning on using
to link the nics in each puter (as you know, that's a total of 3 nics, two in the server machine and one in the client)."

I know nothing, honest. I am viewing that as a positive. I foresee I am in for some research here. I tried the link you posted and saved something to my journal.

The other thing that is going to be interesting for me is learning Windows 2000, which will come installed on the 4100. I am really looking forward to eliminating the memory limitations of W98 and the new machine will have ample RAM (512M) to use the OS' capabilities.

I'll be sharing a bunch on this new project, I am sure.

best,

Rick

ps. Thanks for taking the leadership of this thread on "officially." You've made a heck of a contribution to a lot of users lives.

I did the search as you suggested. Finding some stuff. One post from Lou Dolinar includes this:

"A router also provides a basic level of security that would require additional software on a PC. You can
usually configure a router to "hide" the computers on the network behind it. Nothing to see, nothing to
hack. "

I think this was the setup I had heard about.

Here is a small problem that irritates me on my new machine, with Windows 98.
When I boot up the following message appears on the screen:

Windows Networking
Unable to load the dynamic link library msnp32.dll
The system cannot find the file specified.
Some or all of the following feature is not available Microsoft Network

When I hit OK the boot up continues properly.
It is a small inconvenience that I would like to get rid of.
Any ideas? Keep it simple
