JDS Uniphase Invests in Avantas
Networks

NEPEAN, Canada and SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- JDS Uniphase Corporation
(Nasdaq: JDSU and Toronto: JDU) today announced the completion of a minority equity
investment in Avantas Networks Corporation, a privately held telecommunications network
testing equipment company based in Montreal, Quebec. The terms of the investment were
not disclosed. No approvals under Canadian or U.S. antitrust or competition laws are
required in connection with the investment.

The Avantas Networks product family focuses on the testing and quality of service
assurance of telecommunications networks. The explosive growth of the optical transport
market has coincided with the convergence of various physical and software protocols in
the telecommunications infrastructure, such as DWDM, Sonet/SDH, ATM and IP. Avantas'
products address the needs of network operators and system providers that require ever
more sophisticated network testing, surveillance and service assurance in this increasingly
complex and fast-moving environment. Avantas currently has 55 employees and was
formed in November 1998.<<

James,

Are you questioning Jan's ability to flip burgers and never drop one? She would only be down $6K at the moment.
