Tragically, the majority of victims of landmines are civilians (from 80%
to 90%). At least 15000 Angolans are amputee due to the huge number of
landmines strewn across the country (Angola has a population of 10 million
- and an estimated 9 million land mines in the ground). Anti-personnel
landmines not only kill and maim innocent civilians, they disrupt
economies by making large areas of land useless. Clearing a mine costs
approximately 500 times what it costs to lay the mine. These mines cause
devastating effects in Angola, Cambodia, Iran, Afghanistan, Mozambique,
and in more than fifty other countries around the globe. World War II-era
landmines still injure 12 people per year in Europe.
