Rural and agricultural societies in developing countries
suffer most from the effects of uncleared landmines. This is because the
majority of the population engage in labour intensive activities -
cultivating crops grazing livestock, gathering fuel and collecting water -
this placing them more at risk from injury. An amputee mine victim is an
additional burden on relatives who may have to choose between paying for
the victim's care and rehabilitation, or caring for the whole family.
Often valuable family assets, such as livestock, are sold to satisfy both
demands.

Because of the threat of landmine incidents in rural areas, people stop
farming and migrate to the cities.
