And in case you're wondering whose interpretation to believe, consider: if AMZN really did expect to announce earnings 7-8c better than expected, wouldn't they be just a wee bit more explicit about that?

You are not implying that Amazon used the 7% loss of net sales as an interim intent to mislead those that do not know better are you? It is possible (actually likely) Amazon needs to raise cash and a higher stock price would help. There are rumors and they are very prevalent that Goldman Sachs is in the process of trying to do this for them. Otherwise, you would think today's press release could have given a projected loss from operations rather than a percent of net sales. I guess I just am a bit skeptical.
