BEA’s Sun Sales Soar
The e-software provider finds Sun shipments are gaining momentum over IBM and HP

Coleman, who, along with Edward Scott and Alfred Chuang founded BEA--Bill is the "B" in BEA--has been closely watching the hardware platforms sold along with his company's platform for e-business applications. Of late, he's seen a startling shift. Sun once accounted for 40 percent of shipments, while IBM accounted for 36 percent. HP servers, meanwhile, were selected approximately 16 percent of the time. That was just a few quarters ago. Now, the numbers are remarkably different. Sun selections have jumped to 65 percent of BEA's shipments, while IBM and HP have fallen to approximately 10 percent and 2 percent, respectively. The reason? Sun servers scale much more, Coleman says.
