Taiwan's UMC Dec sales at T$10.27 bln
TAIPEI, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) (NYSE:UMC - news), the world's second largest microchip foundry, said on Tuesday it made sales of T$10.271 billion in December, up 292 percent from the same month in 1999.

That brought full-year 2000 sales to T$105.08 billion, a 260.53 percent rise from the previous year's sales. UMC's 1999 sales figures did not take into account a January 2000 merger with four affiliated firms.

The December sales figures, which were contained in a brief statement, were down from November's T$10.868 billion.

The statement said the month-on-month fall was due to a power outage in December which affected UMC's production. It gave no further details.

On Tuesday, UMC shares rose T$2.50, or 4.95 percent, to T$53.00, while the TAIEX (^TWII - news) index gained 3.62 percent.

(US$1 equals T$33)
