A society or culture will be judged more by future generations than by the current members. As such it will be judged by its memories, legends, and surviving customs. The most sucessfull scheme the world has produced for passing on and improving information is a combination of accurate digital storage, and sex to mix up the good ideas. A good society then is one which preserves and teaches its past, but encourages novel combinations of custom and practice. It's like adding old world pasta to new world tomatoes to make a new customary dish. A society based on one culture, one goal, one true belief, is already a relic. TP
