Why would people want anything other than a floppy disk camera?

Capacity, mainly. Floppies hold only a fraction of what Smartmedia or CompactFlash can hold. If you have to continually swap out floppies because you can't take more than 1 (2,3, whatever) pictures at a time the price advantage can be more than offset by the sheer inconvenience of it all.

Lew, in real estate they say "location, location, location..."

...and for digital cameras its "resolution, resolution, resolution."

I would say that a floppy Mavica is a good choice if you are
not well versed with the PC environment and are satisfied with
the resolution (based on your needs). Floppy devices also tend
to be slower and bulkier, so there is a trade-off for the ease of use.

SmartMedia can be used with a floppy adapter. It does require some
set up to install drivers, but thereafter it gets easier.

I elected to buy a CF camera because I think the media is superior,
because I am a Win CE supporter, and because I was comfortable
with the one-time CF reader hook-up. Also, if you have a laptop
the CF card + adapter is a great option.

If you feel OK with some tinkering with your PC I would buy
a camera you like with as many megapixels as your budget allows.
And don't fixate too much on floppy-based solutions.
