eXcelon Forms Data Management Division - Object Design
New Division Drives Successful Business of Providing Object-oriented Data Management Solutions to Telecommunications, Independent Software Vendor, Finance and e-Business Markets
BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 9, 2001-- eXcelon Corporation (Nasdaq: EXLN - news), today announced it has formed a new division, Object Design, dedicated to growing its highly profitable data management product line.

Object Design, a division of eXcelon Corp., begins operation immediately with dedicated sales, marketing, services, support and engineering resources. Formed as part of an overall corporate reorganization, Object Design will develop and distribute the company's profitable and market-leading object-oriented data management products, which include Object Store, Javlin and PSE Pro. By forming the Object Design division, eXcelon will more effectively target, sell, deliver and service its data management solutions to organizations worldwide.

The formation of this new division follows the company's strong revenue performance in 2000. During 2000, the data management business experienced strong demand for its products in all its core markets, including telecommunications, finance, independent software vendors and e-business. The company closed major data management deals with world-leading organizations including Alcatel, AOL, Amazon.com, British Telecom, Cisco, Coppercom, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Intel, InfoVista, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Westfield Companies and Williams Communications Group.

Object Design will be led by Brian Otis, who will serve as the division's president and chief operating officer, reporting to eXcelon chairman and chief executive officer Bob Goldman. Reporting to Otis will be Allan Stewart as vice president of sales, Katherine Barnes as vice president of marketing and product management, Ken Rugg as vice president of engineering and chief technology officer and Joe Bates as vice president of professional services.

``Object Design pioneered the object-oriented data management market and has remained its undisputed leader since the company's formation more than 12 years ago,'' said Brian Otis, president and chief operating officer of Object Design. ``In 2001, we are reviving the Object Design brand and better aligning our resources to further grow our world-class data management business.''

Object Design's data management product line provides a key component to organizations developing high-performance applications in a highly reliable and scalable environment. In 2001, Object Design will focus on expanding the market for these products with an additional vertical focus and increased penetration into established markets.

``In addition to continued strong demand in the telecommunications, finance and independent software vendor markets, we are seeing an urgent demand by high volume e-business customers to improve on-line response in a variety of scenarios,'' said Otis. ``This new breed of Object Design customer, such as Amazon.com, Softbank and Tour de France, is facing the challenge of addressing scalability, database performance and high availability. Object Design's data management products are uniquely qualified to excel in these areas as they have been deployed in extremely high performance applications in the most demanding vertical markets.''

In order to meet its revenue and profit objectives in 2001, Object Design is increasing investments in marketing and direct sales while continuing to add new innovations to the data management product line.
