Dole's campaign was so inept that it's hard to feel as though there was ever any real break through opportunity that was lost by chance or to the weight of illegal Chinese campaign contributions in the balance of a close fought campaign. There was no such beast in 1996.

Still, in all, Clinton's acceptance of the Chinese intelligence apparatus' campaign contributions did feel rather like having one of the Roman generals invite a few of the Visigoths over the border to help settle a little intra-family dispute.

Maybe that precedent doesn't bode well for how the current crop of Democrats prioritize the significant national threats. "First we'll deal with the REPUBLICANS and then we'll reward our COMMUNIST CHINESE allies." It also stands in sharp historic contrast to Harry Truman's actions in Korea.
