With respect to abortion, I have two children and I think abortion is a terrible thing. But I also have rheumatoid arthritis, and the only drugs that really work are similar to cancer chemotherapy - there's Methotrexate, Arava, Enbrel, Remicade - I am taking Arava, and if I got pregnant the fetus would be deformed because Arava suppresses certain chemicals which are necessary for new cell growth. It's not a big issue with me, really, because my husband has a vasectomy, and I am in my late 40's anyway. But I know if I got pregnant while taking this drug I would have an abortion.

So I have to be honest about it - sometimes birth control doesn't work and sometimes there are very good reasons not to give birth.

It was the birth of my daughter (turns 13 on February 1) that turned the tide on abortion for me also. Early in the pregnancy some of the tests came back indicating a chance for some problems and the dr. brought up our "options". Luckily, it was never a serious consideration for us.

I remember during what must have been the 8th month feeling her "tap" and kick to the tune of some perky music playing on one of those goofy "they call me trinity" movies. And then the joy of cutting the chord and holding her for the first time. Looking at her now...standing 5'7" blossoming into young womanhood with character beyond her years.....it would have been very tragic if we had given our "options" more "thought".

Changes in the heart is the only approach that will ever turn the tide on the abortion issue.
