Beam me down! PCCW gets Japanese digital satellite permit

(29 December 2000) Hong Kong-based IT giant Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW) has announced that its Japan branch has acquired a license to broadcast its Network of the World (NOW) via satellite.

The Japanese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has authorized the company to transmit the programming through a new digital satellite, reports the Dec. 27 Jisuanji Shijie Ribao (China Computer World).

The new satellite will operate in proximity to an older analog satellite transmitting other content. The existing analog satellite transmits its signal to approximately 10 million Japanese families.

The new digital broadcast service was launched in December. A new digital/analog receiver will enable subscribers to receive signals from both satellites with one antenna.

NOW is the multimedia broadband service of PCCW and provides television programs over a broadband Internet connection.

PCCW says it will offer video-on-demand programs, e-commerce, games and electronic program guides (EPG) to Japanese users through various services. It will also provide Internet content services related to the programs through NOW's Japan branch, the story said.
